Spot color printing uses pre-mixed, specific color inks directly on press, rather than mixing colors from CMYK.

The most well-known spot color system is Pantone. Each color is assigned a unique number (e.g., Pantone 185 C for red, Pantone 300 C for blue). Printers mix base pastes according to Pantone‘s formulas to produce the exact desired color, then print it as a separate unit.

4. Color Gamut: Why Can‘t Some Colors Be Printed?

Color gamut is the key concept for understanding the difference between CMYK and spot color. In simple terms, color gamut is the range of colors a system can reproduce.

CMYK gamut covers only a portion of the visible light spectrum. Bright oranges, pure purples, fluorescents, and most metallic colors fall outside the CMYK gamut. When a design contains such colors, the press will automatically convert them to the closest possible CMYK mix – but the result often looks duller or muddier.

Spot color gamut is significantly larger than CMYK. The Pantone system includes thousands of standard colors, including fluorescent, pastel, and metallic shades that CMYK cannot achieve. If a color exists on a Pantone swatch book, spot color printing can reproduce it faithfully.

• CMYK + spot varnish: A spot UV or matte varnish is applied over a four-color print to enhance tactile and visual effects.

• Spot base + CMYK overprint: A large solid background is printed as a spot color first, then four-color graphics are overprinted. This avoids the unevenness that can occur when large solid areas are built from CMYK dots.
